Macroalgae specialist for the hydrocolloids sector. We believe that innovation is the key to progress, which is why we are committed to promoting sustainability in the algae sector.

SINCE 1964

Company’s History

After World War II (1939-1945), Japan, devastated, was looking for alternatives to supply various products, including agar-agar, a hydrocolloid that performs essential functions as a thickener and gelling agent.

In Europe, hydrocolloid production units began to emerge in the 1950s, particularly in Portugal, Spain and France.

Responding to the growing demand for this product, Iberagar was founded in 1964, first establishing itself in Alverca do Ribatejo (Quinta de Santa Maria), and later, in 1969, transferring its operational base to Barreiro (Quinta da Areia – Coina), where it remains today.

Currently, the company is dedicated to harvesting algae biomass for the hydrocolloids sector, consolidating its position as an important player in this industrial area.

AGAR-agar

Products

Since the discovery of agar plates, which enabled scientists to isolate diseases such as tuberculosis and cholera, bacteriological agar has been obtained from red algae of the Gelidium genus. This type of agar is especially valued by research centers, universities and specialized laboratories, where it is used as a culture medium for microorganisms and in molecular biology techniques, such as agarose gels.

Portugal has ideal natural conditions for the production of this algae species, as evidenced by its natural abundance. The country benefits from a privileged geographical position, with an extensive coastline, strong hydrodynamic seas and a sunny climate, factors that make Portugal a strategic location for the production of Gelidium. The harvesting, production and processing of algae are commercial activities of great relevance to the Blue Economy, contributing significantly to sustainable development and the enhancement of marine resources.
